Ahead of the 50-year anniversary of ABBA’s 1974 Eurovision triumph with ‘Waterloo’ in Brighton, we commissioned the Swedish illustrator Andreas Bennwik to create a series of images based on the song’s music video. ‘It represents ABBA at that particular time while also being quite timeless, with their brightly coloured outfits against a neutral white background. I wanted to create an illustration that feels hand-painted and contemporary,’ he explained.

When ABBA was about to perform in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974, Frida entered a fashion shop called Gröna Moln och Blått Gräs in Stockholm. There she met a woman called Inger Svenneke who worked in the store at the time.
The magic of an unforgettable night
Frida and Inger Svenneke together created these colorful and original costumes for the Eurovision performance. The Waterloo costumes are almost as iconic as ABBA themselves, and have inspired our 2024 ABBA Waterloo collection in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Waterloo.
